About FIDA-KENYA

Our Work

Access To Justice

Recognizing that great progress has been made in formal equality, substantive equality is yet to be realized. The Access to Justice Programme provides legal aid services to indigent women in Kenya towards the realization of their social, economic, political, and cultural rights.

Institutional Strengthening

The institutional objective under strategic leadership and governance is to build and service FIDA-Kenya structures that are efficient, effective, and responsive to stakeholders needs.

Mediation

Mediation is one of the most successful Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms adopted by FIDA-Kenya. It is an informal process in which an independent person referred to as a mediator, assists parties to reach an agreement. The role of the mediator is not to give solutions to the dispute but to assist the parties arrive at an agreement.

Knowledge Management Programme

Through this programme, FIDA Kenya seeks to deliberately contribute to the body of knowledge in the women's rights movement.
Through thorough analysis of the Constitution, national developmental agenda set out in Vision 2030, and its operational framework in the MTP II, FIDA-Kenya has invested in capturing ways in which these national priorities must promote women's rights to be fully and meaningfully realized.

Women And Governance

FIDA-Kenya recognizes the drastic legal and policy reforms enacted to support gender equality. However, the Kenyan women continue to suffer various forms of discrimination as a result of lack of normative frameworks on the implementation of these laws and policies.
Weak institutions, lack of awareness, retrogressive cultural practices, structural inequalities, and strong influence in the implementation of laws by patrochial practices continue to hinder progress.

Our Story

Where it all Began

FIDA-Kenya is the premier women's rights organization in Kenya. In a span of 33 years, the organization has offered free legal aid to over 320,000 women and their children. The matters range from custody and maintenance, matrimonial disputes, discrimination in employment, participation in public positions, FGM, GBV and sexual violence. FIDA-Kenya similarly conducts education and advocacy programmes that positively impact on structural, institutional, and legal reforms accross the region to ensure gender sensitivity and responsiveness. The organization was established in 1985 during the 3rd UN Conference on Women held in Nairobi and attained registration in 1993 under the NGO Coordination Act. FIDA-Kenya is a membership organization of over 1,100 women lawyers, and law students who are committed to the creation of a society that is free from all forms of discrimination against women in Kenya.

TESTIMONIALS

"

I first heard about FIDA when i was in primary school. Its name inthe media was tarnished as ana organization thatwas determined to break people's homes, and leave children disadvantaged.I grew up to see how wrong that notion was. Why? Because doing the right thing is never received well and/or popular That is what Fida does....the right thing.

Working at FIDA-Kenya has afforded me a greater understanding on how to better empower women in the society while advocating for their rights. Not many women are well informed about their rights and thus through FIDA-Kenya, I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my information with vulnerable girls and women. Women feel safe whenever they have a conversation with any of the FIDA-Staff and I am truly grateful and amazed to be part of a movement that is set out to make a better place for the young women and girls in society.

I saw the dignity of women eroded for lack of access to justice. All these experiences inspired me to take pro-bono matters seriously. It pains me to see a mother unable to access her babies because the in-laws are rich or a child unable to attend school because the father is estranged from the mother and the list goes on. I vowed to have at least one pro-bono case on child custody and maintenance at any time handled by my law firm Keli and Associates.
